ISM is very pleased to be hosting Dr. Virginia Rojas for the EARCOS sponsored weekend workshop on November 9-10, 2013 titled Translating Brain Research into Effective Language and Literacy Instruction. Gini will spend two days with us discussing that while acquiring another language in and of itself makes the brain grow, teachers can also make a difference in the brain development of language learners. The traditional paradigm of language teaching – teach test teach – ignores the hallmarks of brain-based learning. This two-day institute focuses on how language teachers can use research principles to guide how they plan and implement immersion-style, multipath learning experiences – where language learners have opportunities to prime, engage, choose, prepare and rehearse for challenging speaking and writing tasks. Institute objectives will be accomplished through a variety of learning experiences planned to give participants a sense of developing theory in brain research and language teaching but, more importantly, to give participants immediate applications of strategies to classroom teaching, and reflection on the success of such instruction.
