Making Thinking Visible: Building Understanding Through Critical and Creative Thinking

Making Thinking Visible: Building Understanding Through Critical and Creative Thinking
May 10-August 9, 2012

How can we activate students’ thinking to build understanding in the subject area? And how can we help students to think more critically and creatively at the same time?

During this course, you will learn to personalize and apply a research-based framework called Visible Thinking which is being used effectively in a number of schools. Adaptable to any subject area, Visible Thinking allows getting started almost at once with ‘thinking routines’ that help students ponder ideas from the subject area. These routines, together with other ‘cultural forces’ such as language and expectations, and often with the use of art and artifacts as conversational foci, create a vibrant culture of thinking and understanding in the classroom.

Exploring the Reggio Emilia approach

Exploring the Reggio Emilia approach
June 6-8, 2012 Melbourne, Australia
June 11-18, 2012 Singapore
Dr. Nkechy Ezeh

This workshop is designed to introduce participants to the philosophy and theories behind the Reggio Emilia approach and how it can be adapted in their setting.

Why is the Reggio Emilia approach important to the field of early childhood education? Newsweek (Hinckle, 1991) hailed the Reggio Emilia approach as one of the best educational programs in the world. As a result of this, many early childhood educators are trying to implement the approach in their own classrooms. If early childhood educators are to adapt and use this highly regarded educational approach, classroom teachers, and pre-service teachers must be taught to understand and develop strategies for adapting the approach into their setting.

The workshop is specially designed for all educators of early childhood and primary age children, those responsible for early childhood pre-service and in-service teacher education and all who are seeking to understand children and learn about innovative and effective ways to help children reach their academic potential.

Summer Writer’s Workshop

Summer Writer’s Workshop
July 8-15, 2012 Reed College, Portland, Oregon

A board composed of Tin House editorial staff members decides upon applications. Acceptance is based on the strength and promise of the submitted writing sample, as well as how much the board feels an applicant might benefit from the workshop.

We will notify applicants of acceptance or rejection within four weeks of the application’s receipt. Once accepted, enrollment into the program is granted on a first-come, first-serve basis. We encourage students to apply early, as workshops can fill quickly.
