“Writing in the Disciplines” with Stevi Quate – Oct 4-5, 2014

Workshop Overview:

Isn’t effective writing just plain good writing? Sometimes yes, and sometimes no. What counts as effective writing of fiction is not necessarily the same as effective writing of history or science. Join us in this highly interactive workshop that promises to be practical, yet grounded in a solid research base. Designed for middle and high school teachers of English, science, and social studies, this workshop investigates these questions:

  1. What does it mean to write in a disciplinary-specific way?
  2. What is common to all good writing?
  3. What writing practices serve as powerful tools for apprenticeship?

The major premise of this workshop is that a teacher’s role is to apprentice students into the ways of thinking specific to their discipline and that writing instruction is most successful when teachers engage their students in writing practices that are discipline-specific.

The workshop is divided into three sections:

  • An opportunity for teachers to experience a writing workshop that uses writing to learn strategies as participants build content knowledge;
  • An investigation into what it means to write in a disciplinary-specific way;
  • An exploration of best practices for teaching writing that content area teachers can incorporate into their classrooms with the purpose of helping students understand their content.
